The ‘Punk Princess’ (2009) series is closely related to Alice’s personal life.
This series represents the emotions Alice felt while going through a heartbreak. The character ‘Punk Princess’ is based on her own personality. The character began as a sweet and naïve girl who eventually grew into a strong and confident woman throughout the series. The skulls and hearts in this series symbolize the character of Punk Princess, which is sweet, girlish and innocent, but at the same time strong and brave.
Punk Princess nr 1 – Happy In Love
A madly in love couple is having a romantic entre nous in snow-clad Central Park. The girl just received a few presents (a teddy bear, a bracelet and a rose) from her angel, as represented by the angel-monkey on his Paul Frank shirt. She is not taking notice of the subtle signs of the grimly near future between the two of them.
Punk Princess nr 2 – Heart Attack
The angel has transformed into a devil, also visible on his t-shirt, and attacks the girl from behind. A couple of animals, with a symbolic value, are visible in the backdrop. The hedgehog symbolizes armor and aggressiveness, the spider symbolizes the attempt to sin. The black crow is a predictor of evil and the eagle is a symbol of power. In de backdrop of the image, a guardian angel is watching over the wellbeing of Punk Princess.
Punk Princess nr 3 – Losing Grip
Punk Princess feels lost and abandoned, surrounded by the daily routine of an urban jungle. The gifts, received in the first scene, are lying impaired scattered on the floor. A rat is climbing out of the garbage back of a passing by plastic collector.
Punk Princess nr 4 – Power Fight
Punk Princess regains her strength and sense of self dignity and starts to stand up for herself. The backdrop of this imagine is formed by Ground Zero. “To me, Ground Zero is like an open wound in the middle of New York City. After time passing by this wound became a scar. A scar from which new energy arises. New projects are being build and soon new towers will arise from the ashes” The thistle in the foreground is a symbol of undoing evil omens.
Punk Princess nr 5 – Happy Ending
Fortunately, the story has a happy ending. Punk Princess is once again filled with happiness and enjoying a lovely summer day in the park. We can see a few symbolic animals surrounding her. The dove is a symbol for peace, the butterflies are symbolizing paradise, metamorphosis and beauty. The swan is a symbol for love and purity and the frog is a suggestion towards the future prince that will bring happiness to Punk Princess’ life. The other animals depicted in this scene are inhabitants of Central Park in New York. The cardinal, the turtles and the raccoon. Inspired by encountering these animals several times on her daily stroll through Central Park, Alice gave them a supporting role in her Punk Princess fairytale.
